Lake Mary, Anderson Mesa Fault, AZ

A swarm of small earthquakes was recorded and located by the Arizona Earthquake Information Center seven miles south of Flagstaff near the Lake Mary city reservoir. The earthquakes ranged in size from 2.0 up to 2.7 in magnitude and began on June 21 with the swarm culminating over the week-end of June 24-26. This area has not been highly active over the last several decades, however a similar swarm occured in the same area between October 5-7, 1979. The swarms indicate that the Anderson Mesa fault zone is still actively producing stress related events. The Anderson Mesa/Lake Mary fault proper is known to be about 40 km long and capable of generating up to magnitude 6.9 events.
