SOUTH RIM, GRAND CANYON, AND TUBA CITY REGIONS

 

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck the South Rim area of the Grand Canyon yesterday evening October 31st at 8:24 pm local time. The earthquake was centered about 3 miles southwest of the Grand Canyon Village. The South Rim area continues to be the most seismically active region of Arizona, including earthquakes in March 1992 with magnitudes of 4.0 and 4.5. The magnitude 4.9 and 5.4 earthquakes of April 1993 occurred 20 miles south of last night's epicenters.

In addition, a magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck the Tuba City region early Sunday morning October 18th at 12:13 am. The epicenter was 15 miles southeast of Tuba City. That earthquake was felt by several residents of Tuba City, but occurred in a region where we have not previously detected earthquakes.
